| Detailed instructions: Keep your Shift Deck out in the open, in clear view. Arrange 'face-down' in a vase, bowl, or other small container, for easy picking. Extend your hand toward the cards. Using your thumb and forefinger, clamp down on one card. Pull the single card upward, away from the rest of the deck. (see fig. 1) Read the instructions and literally do what the card says. The instructions are designed to reliably help you shift from your undesired state. Simply reading the card and/or dismissing the need to actually perform the instructions does not reliably produce a shift. |

TO EXPERIENCE A SHIFT, IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU ACTUALLY DO THE ACTIVITY ON THE CARD YOU PULL.

| Many cards include a time limit symbol. This is the suggested minimum time requirement, and may be exceeded.
Cards with the "no words" symbol should be acted out with no actual words in any known language - gibberish and random vocal sounds are acceptable.
If physical limitations or health reasons prevent you from following the instructions, you may return the card to the deck and pick a different card. The Shift deck includes only low-impact, non-violent physical activity. Consult your physician, or use your best judgment, before performing any strenuous exercise, or haphazardly interpreting what words like "prop" and "celebrate" could possibly mean. |
Special Rules: Anyone telling someone else they should pick a shift card is automatically required to pull a card first and follow the instructions. The Shift Deck is not a social weapon. Anyone pulling a card who is reluctant to follow the instructions must go to the nearest mirror and make silly faces at themselves. If no mirror is available, the reluctant player must sit down immediately and repeat 5 times, "I don't want to play." *Glossary: Shift: a noticeable change in your sense of freedom, creativity, emotional wellbeing, and/or attitude toward yourself and others. Persona: a false personality one employs to conceal his or her feelings or desires. For example, one may act very serious in order to conceal a feeling of embarassment. Sensation: a phenomenon that can be felt. Examples: hunger, twitch, itch, butterflies, tickle, soreness, heat, pressure. Love: an attitude of unconditional acceptance, forgiveness, and wonder that transcends judgment or circumstance. Prop: an object to aid in a theatrical performance. For example, a hat, cup, or pencil. |
